Our Story

Connections to Independence began as a program developed through Summit Academy OIC to address the challenges youth face when transitioning out of foster care. The program focused on improving long-term outcomes for young people by connecting them with supportive adults, community resources, and practical life skills. In 2010, the program became its own nonprofit organization, allowing it to expand services and deepen its impact for youth in foster care across the Minneapolis community. Today, the organization continues to help young people move toward self-sufficiency through structured programming, mentorship, and partnerships with local organizations.

Founder Story

Connections to Independence were shaped through collaboration between Summit Academy OIC and community partners who recognized the need for stronger support systems for youth leaving foster care. Leaders and advocates within the program worked to create a model focused on relationship building, skill development, and long-term stability. Their work continues today through the organization’s staff, partners, and mentors who guide youth as they build confidence, pursue education, secure housing, and step into independent adulthood.
