“You feel good, you look good!”

Selena Briseno became a hairstylist in 2015 when she launched her brand Selena’s, and since then she’s been steadily building a list of happy clients. Specializing in modern color, Selena is committed to increasing her knowledge by earning certifications in Aqua Hair Extensions, REDKEN and OLIGO—all in service to creating only the best modern and dimensional looks for her clients.

What inspired you to start your business, and what is your long-term vision for it?

I had worked for someone else’s business and I realized that I was very helpful in making it modern and bringing in something different. I am very business savvy and realized I wasn’t being recognized or compensated for what I brought to the table. My vision became, instead of investing in a business that didn’t value me, I will invest in me! Invest in my vision, because I will value me! I opened up my suite to pursue my own salon with my personality and values, and one day I will open my own storefront.

What do you love about living and owning a business in Minnesota?

I love that the community of small businesses are very supportive. We all love supporting in more ways than one. We are very proud of our business and proud to show we are Minnesotan. I love living in Minnesota because there are so many things to see or do—scenic walks, parks, wineries, city life, good food! What don’t we have!?

What is your proudest achievement so far as a business owner?

Making two years in the business has so far been my biggest accomplishment. Growing a small business in a competitive field is always hard, but I keep thinking I’m doing something right if I’m still open, and I have amazing clients!!

What is one challenge you had to overcome, and how did you resolve it?

Learning about the “back of the house”. As a hairstylist, we are really only taught most of our career how to do hair., not how to manage the business. Spending all year deep diving into how to manage my business has been a challenge, but also very enlightening!

What are 3 things you love about your business?

1. My salon’s ambiance.

2. I love that I get to do what I love!

3. There’s so many jobs wrapped in one. I'm never bored!

What is the best decision you've made so far as a business owner?

Taking educational classes, and watching and learning from other influential hairstylists on managing a business. There’s power in knowing your numbers as a business owner. I think it elevated me in a business aspect.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were starting out?

How to financially start a business. I would have gotten a business loan instead of using my own money. (I know! Rookie move!)

Just for fun, what song best describes your business and why?

Golden by Jill Scott. This is one song that represents my business because it’s a very positive, upbeat song. It makes you feel happy! Which is what I strive to make my clients feel.
